5 Best ways to make money as a web or mobile apps developer in Nigeria

There are could be a hundred and one ways to make money as a mobile or web developer in Nigeria. But in this post, I want to share with you what I consider to be the best money-making opportunities for software guys. Even if you are not a guru yet in software dev you will see what you can do in this post.

So, you really want to make money as a web, mobile or software developer, see the lucrative opportunities for you!

1. Get a job

Getting a job is perhaps the quickest (and often the easiest) way to make money as a software developer, be it web, desktop or mobile apps development.

In Nigeria currently, the software guys have more job opportunities compared to many other careers. The demand for good software developers is relatively higher, especially in the cities of Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

This makes getting a dev job an easier option, especially if you are getting started and haven’t got your name out there yet or built a network of prospective clients.

2. Become a freelancer

Job is awesome, especially if you are on a job you like. But then, there are developers who don’t want job/employment by companies but prefer to run their own business, be their own boss and bear all the risks. These are freelance developers.

If you want to take this route you have to think more of an entrepreneur than just a developer because you have to take charge of most things about your business, like building your own brand, finding clients who need your services, managing finances, etc.

The truth is that becoming a successful freelance is not easy and usually it takes more time than all the other alternatives.

But then to some people, nothing gives them more joy than being their own boss and running their thing the way they want it. This means freedom!

3. Build and sell apps

This is what I find most interesting: build an app, automate things (eg. payment), if it becomes successful then you can make money while sleeping. Isn’t that so cool?

And the fact is that many developers out there are making money from their own apps.

Now the question is can you come up with a solution in the form of an app? But not just a solution but one that people are willing to pay for.

Note: Your idea doesn’t necessarily have to be the next Uber (awesome! If it is). It could be a number of small apps that are successful.

4. Teach programming

Another way to make money as a developer is to teach beginners what you know. Offer web or app development courses in offline, or teach online if having an offline classroom is going to be a challenge.

A side note:

There are tons of free programming tutorial videos online, especially on YouTube… who would want to pay a tutor when he can get these tutorials for free?

Have you ever wondered why websites like Udemy, Udacity, Pluralsight, etc. are still popular despite free tutorials available? It is the same reason people still go to school to study engineering from their professors despite tons of free engineering materials out there.

There is a big difference between having an experienced developer guide you through and trying to figure it out on your own. This is perhaps the main reason people pay for programming courses. Also, free things are what they are – FREE. If you want the real deal you have to pay for it.

5. Star up your startup

If you are ambitious and want to go for the big things, build solutions for potential millions or even billions, then consider building a startup company.

A startup is a buzz in the tech industry. Many people like the sound of it, many desire it, but only a few know the realities of it.
